Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) is a synthetic calcium carbonate produced by precipitating calcium salts from a solution under controlled conditions. It is also known as purified, refined, or synthetic calcium carbonate. PCC is a white, fine crystalline powder, odorless, and practically insoluble in water. Key Characteristics:
  • Chemical Formula: CaCO3 (the same as limestone, marble, and chalk).
  • Production: Synthetically processed from high-grade limestone.
  • Appearance: White, fine crystalline powder.
  • Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, but solubility increases in the presence of carbon dioxide.
  • Particle Size and Shape: PCC has a consistent particle size and can be designed with specific shapes and sizes.
  • Purity: Generally high purity, often around 98% CaCO3.
  • Availability: Available in different bulk densities, ranging from 0.40 g/cc to 0.9 g/cc, depending on the application.
  • Properties: Offers excellent whiteness, brightness, and flufiness.
    Applications:
    • Paper Industry: Used as a filler to improve brightness, opacity, printability, and dimensional stability of paper.
    • Plastic Industry: Used as a filler and extender in various plastic applications.
    • Pharmaceuticals: Used as a calcium supplement in formulations.
    • Rubber Industry: Used as a filler.
    • Cosmetics: Used as a filler and for its brightening properties.
    • Paints: Used as a filler and for its whitening properties.
    • Printing Ink: Used as a filler and to improve ink properties.
    • Construction Materials: Used as a filler and for its binding properties.
    • Detergent Powders: Used to improve water absorption capacity and fluffiness, providing a free-flowing property.
