Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), commonly known as Epsom salt, is a white crystalline solid, a salt of magnesium and sulfuric acid. It's a common household chemical used in bath salts and various other applications, and also finds use in medicine and agriculture. Key characteristics and properties:
  • Composition: It's an inorganic compound made of magnesium cations (Mg2+) and sulfate anions (SO42-).
  • Appearance: Typically white, crystalline.
  • Solubility: Freely soluble in water, very soluble in boiling water, and sparingly soluble in alcohol.
  • Hydrates: It can exist as hydrates (MgSO4⋅nH2O), where 'n' can range from 1 to 11, the most common being Epsom salt (MgSO4⋅7H2O).
  • Taste: Has a bitter, salty, cooling taste.
  • Efflorescence: Crystals can lose water of hydration in warm, dry air

    Uses:
    • Bath salts: Used in bath salts to soothe sore muscles and skin.
    • Medication: Used to relieve constipation, treat seizures, and as a tocolytic (a drug that stops premature labor).
    • Agriculture: Used as a fertilizer.
    • Flotation therapy: Used to create concentrated solutions for isolation tanks.
    • Mineral waters: Magnesium and sulfate ions are naturally present in some mineral waters.
